The 3rd Annual Wild Salmon Festival will be held July 27-29 in Lumby’s Community Park this year and organizers want the whole community to get involved!

Festival producer, Randy Rauck says, “This Festival will create more positive awareness about our local wild salmon, and we encourage the entire community to participate in a number of ways: businesses can decorate their windows or offer a special salmon related product or service.  We’re asking all the local food and art vendors who will be at the Festival to create a salmon special or design to tie into the theme.  Of course, we will continue with our very popular education sessions about the salmon, and are planning a group walk of the Salmon Trail Saturday and Sunday, as part of our festivities.  Wild salmon have a history in our valley and this Festival aims to raise awareness about enhancing their future and returning them to our streams and rivers for spawning above the dam.”

Building a fish passage around Wilsey Dam will enable the salmon to return to the Cherryville area for spawning as they did before the dam was built. The dam was constructed in 1929 by the West Canadian Hydro Electric Corporation (which later became part of BC Hydro), with the recommendation that a fish passage be constructed to allow the Chinook, Sockeye and Coho salmon to gain access to 30 kms of pristine spawning area above the dam. The Shuswap Falls turbines provided power to most of the North Okanagan area in past times.
Historically, these spawning grounds were an important spiritual and cultural site.  Okanagan Nation Grand Chief Philip has said: “We want to see the salmon and the habitats restored so we can enjoy a healthy fishery once again.”

“We hope the community will get behind this Festival,” says Rauck.  “From buying a ticket and attending, to volunteering, or making a donation, it all helps organizers to be able to keep this Festival in Lumby.”  The musical line-up features many acts including Cod Gone Wild, The Young’uns, Crossfire, Wheelhouse, The John Noren Band, Linda Sue Wilson Band, Ash, Incanto, Gallon’s Corner and many others. The Lumby Lions will be hosting a beer gardens as well this year.

Advance tickets  are available at the Monashee Arts Council Office or online at www.wildsalmonfest.com for just $30 for a Weekend Pass.

Festival organizers appreciate the support of the BC Arts Council, White Valley Parks Recreation and Culture, The Monashee Arts Council, and all of the sponsors for their donations of funding, supplies, and time.

Proceeds from the Festival are donated to the Middle Shuswap Wild Salmon Society.  Memberships in the society will be available for purchase during the Festival. Information on the society’s goals and mission is at www.wildsalmonsociety.com

"Cod Gone Wild" to headline
the 3rd annual Wild Salmon Festival
July 27-29 in Lumby

The 3rd annual Wild Salmon Festival will be held July 27-29th in Lumby BC Canada and will feature Saturday evening headliner "Cod Gone Wild"
They have just released their second studio album entitled "The Traveler"

The Middle Shuswap Wild Salmon Society directors felt that it would be very appropriate for the Wild Cods to headline this years Wild Salmon Festival show after having a chance to hear them play and watch them perform on New Years Eve 2011.

The infectious dance music had everyone singing and dancing in very little time and the energy was strong and fun right to the end!

Cod Gone Wild is a Modern World Celtic band, based out of the Okanagan Valley. The “Cods” have melded veteran musicians from diverse musical backgrounds such as folk, rock, jazz, and funk, to create a modern Celtic sound with driving rhythms and tight vocal harmonies. Cod Gone Wild was born when Newfoundlander and lead singer/guitarist Andrew Mercer made the move to British Columbia in 2009. With him he brought a passion for traditional Irish/Newfoundland music and a vision to create something unique in British Columbia and Canada, while promoting the culture, heritage, and music that he has grown up listening to and performing since he was five. With the musical team of Anjuli Otter (fiddle, vocals), Chad “Rhino” Carter (Drums, Vocals), and Roy Kawano (Bass) the vision has become a reality and has evolved into something very unique.

More info on the Cods can be found at www.CodGoneWild.com

Other great acts that are confirmed for the event are "The Young'uns", "Crossfire", "Linda Sue Wilson Band", "Gallon's Corner", "The Mabel Lickers" "Christine" ,"Priscilla Judd, "Ash", "Incanto" and others. Plus Artists, Artisans, Dancers, Story Tellers, Food Vendors, Wild Salmon Education, Hang Gliding, Paragliding

Since the beginning of time Coyote has lived here and used this place to celebrate the Salmon by inviting all of his friends to a great feast and jollification. This is the Wild Salmon Festival inspired by the migration of an ancient spirit which begins in the great Shuswap River and the mystical mountains called the Monashee
The goal of this festival is to support and raise awareness about our local wild salmon and the need to expedite a salmon passage over Wilsey Dam at Shuswap Falls. All proceeds go to the Middle Shuswap Wild Salmon Society.
The Middle Shuswap Wild Salmon Society (MSWSS) was formed to promote awareness of the Chinook, Sockeye and endangered Pacific Coho salmon impacted by human activity in the Middle Shuswap Watershed in BC’s interior.
A giant-sized salmon was a major attraction during the Wild Salmon Festival July 27-29 in the Lumby Community Park.  The Salmon was designed and constructed of paper maché by Colleen Ferri and Priscilla Judd with help from other volunteers.  The Salmon mascot will help the Middle Shuswap Wild Salmon Society increase awareness about the local wild salmon spawning grounds and the need for a passage around the Wilsey Dam. Proceeds from the Festival support the activities of the Society.

Music, Dance, Workshops, kids activities and paragliding and hangliding in the skies above Lumby entertained the Festival goers.  Specific activities during the Festival to raise awareness about wild salmon included:
  • Aboriginal stories and songs and speeches from Westbank First Nations, Okanagan Indian Band, and Splatsin First Nations representatives
  • Information presentations from Wilsey Dam Fish Passage Committee and Middle Shuswap Wild Salmon Society
  • Songs about the salmon from Priscilla Judd, Randy Rauck and the band, Ash
  • Salmon Skit by Monashee Players Theatre Company
  • We love Salmon Banner and T-Shirts painting activities
  • Salmon and traditional foods from Joy’s Mexican Kitchen, All Fired Up and the Bannock Wagon
  • Designating the week leading up to the Festival as Wild Salmon Celebration Week.

Festival organizers were especially pleased that Okanagan Indian Band Chief Bryon Louis and Splatsin Chief Wayne Christain and members of their communities were available to attend and address Festival goers.  Producer, Rauck Rauck says, “We really appreciated their time, songs, stories and historical information about the importance of the salmon to their people, the environment and the region. “

The Society would also like to thank all of the musicians, presenters, vendors, volunteers, and sponsors for their time and donations to support the Festival activities.  Rauck says, “While it takes a lot to put together a 3-day community festival, the cause is very important to people in this region and it would be gratifying to see the fish passage built before the salmon fry, released this past Spring return in the coming years.”

The Society would like to thank all our sponsors for their donations which makes the Festival possible.
